Shipment: Common Items You Can’t Ship
As an individual, there are many restrictions on what can and cannot be shipped both domestically and internationally. Part of this has to do with the dangers involved in transporting certain items. Other factors that involve the shipment of certain types of items have to do with whether or not the items are allowed to be received into another country or jurisdiction.
Domestic Restrictions
When it comes to domestic shipping, a few of the most common items that can’t be shipped through the United States Postal Service and other carriers include:
- Ammunition
- Explosives
- Marijuana (medical, recreational, etc.)
- Alcoholic Beverages
- Firearms
- Perfumes
- Tobacco Products
This is only a partial list. Go to https://www.usps.com/ship/shipping-restrictions.htm for a full list of items.
International Restrictions
International restrictions prohibit the shipment of many different types of items. Part of the reason for this has to do with the fact that many items, like alcohol, tobacco, and currency are not allowed to be received into the country. Other items that are restricted include:
- Ammunition
- Lithium batteries
- Cremated remains
- Medications
- Medical devices
- Live Animals
- Volatiles substances like lighter fluid, fingernail polishes/remover, glues, and paint
Customs agents will confiscate any restricted items and may levy stiff penalties. They may even arrest individuals who are caught trying to ship items to a residence or business in an area where they are not allowed.
